History

The first seafood festival was in 1986 as the "Charlie Tuna Festival".  During the first few years it bounced between the Charleston Boat Basin and Pony Village Mall returning permanently to Charleston by 1990. During the first few years the festival was on again off again but has been solid for the past 12 plus years.  In 1986 the festival received a prized possession known as "Charlie the Tuna" (1986 -2008) an 8 foot wood carving of the famed Star-Kist advertising icon.  In 2006 the festival received "Charlie Jr." a 10 foot replacement for Charlie Sr. who was beginning the show his age with cancer.  Charlie stood at the east end of the Charleston Bridge.  Charlie  the 3rd will stand where his grandfather stood at the east end of the Charleston Bridge greeting people as they enter Charleston.

The festival grew over the years and today provides booth spaces for 80 selling items from t-shirts to shell wind chimes besides the famed seafood from the Charleston area.  Each food vendor is required to provide 1 menu option of seafood.  This event is known to draw between 15,000 and 20,000 over the two days.

The Association has taken this at the request of the Charleston Merchant's Association due to declining activity levels of it's members.

The Association Executive Board will try diligently to make this transition as seamless as possible and we will provide as much information as possible from this web site.

Disclaimer: the historical information is limited and cannot be completely substantiated as there are several different memories of the history of this event.
